Who is Tanner Ellis?
Tanner Ellis is a 22-year-old native Houstonian and professional actor. He's been performing on stages and in front of the camera since age seven. His theatrical training began at The Ensemble Theatre's Young Performers Program. He attended their summer program year after year until he was old enough for an internship. He went on to perform on the stages of Houston-area theaters such as Mainstreet Theatre and Theatre Under the Stars. He graduated from High School for the Performing Arts (HSPVA) and went on to attend Norfolk State University for 2 years before moving back to Houston and signing with two talent agencies. Recently, He's transitioned into film work and can be seen in new and familiar series.
The Houston Arts Scene
According to Ellis, Houston is an enormous, multi-cultural, multi-generational city. The city is only expanding and getting more crowded as time passes. Houston houses many talented and gifted individuals.
"There's so much talent in this city. We are finally reaching a place where our talent is slowly getting the recognition it deserves," he shared.
He went on to explain that Texas is a seperate market from L.A. and Atlanta. Texas market for film and theatre is growing tremendously as a whole. More and more commercials and films are slowly being shot in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, etc.
"Projects are trickling down to the Houston area as well. I was Chris Paul's stand-in for a Nickelodeon commercial shot right here in Houston. The arts in Houston have come so far, yet have a long way to go."
Advice for Those Pursuing Entertainment Careers
Tanner still considers himself a beginner. But, the most important thing he wants colleagues to remember is that there is no "right way" to achieve goals. He suggests that people achieve and approach things the best way they know how.
"Different things work for different people. Never stop evolving and growing. I've done quite a bit, but I'm only 22 and understand I have a long way to go."
He says he wants to take every moment he has to better himself mentally, physically, and spiritually.God comes first for him and he believes that if he allows God to guide him, everything will fall into place.
In 2007, at 12 years old, Tanner attended the American Black Film Festival in L.A., and got the opportunity to personally hand Bill Duke and Tracy Edmonds his written TV treatment. He's also traveled to seven countries.
During the run of "Eighth Day of the Week" at The Ensemble Theatre, Ellis filmed a speaking role in OWN's hit drama, "Queen Sugar" which aired May 30, 2018. This Summer, you can see him the role of Kev on Marvel's Cloak and Dagger, airing June 7, 2018 on Freeform and Hulu.
