Did anybody get that Migos reference?👆🏾 No? okay, it's cool.
Anyway, I started 2018 with the Daniel Fast, which is a fast modeled after that which Daniel ate while praying and seeking God. My church participates in the fast at the beginning of the year not only to pray and grow closer to God, but to cleanse the body of all the bad from the previous year. Being that I eat healthy most of the time, the ideas of the Daniel Fast doesn't bother me much. However, after looking at all that can and can't be eaten, I always think "Okay so basically I'm eating grains all month..." Oh contrar. Here are my favorite ways to make it through the Daniel Fast, which carry over into my regular healthy eating.
For the Carb Lover
Instead of eating breads, pasta, and rice, focus on the whole grain, unleavened version of those items, which contain less calories and sugar.
-whole wheat pasta
-rice cakes (not flavored)
-brown rice (and other whole grain rice)
For the Flavor Lover
I wasn't so successful in cooking with Daniel Fast ingredients, but one thing I knew was that during the fast, Chipotle was boyfriend #2. Aside from the meat, flower tortillas, etc. Chipotle has some pretty tasty options that satisfy a vegan diet. My meal of choice was, and still is, a bowl or three corn tortillas full of brown rice, pinto beans, and sofritas (ground and seasoned tofu). For a little extra flavor you can add black beans and corn. Unfortunately, Chipotle did away with corn tortillas *rolls eyes* so you can use your own or stick with a bowl.
For the Sweet Lover
Rice cakes with peanut butter is an easy breakfast combo. I pair that with fruit or a mix of Craisins and sunflower seeds (preferably roasted, unsalted). This makeshift trail mix is my favorite because of the satisfying combination of bitter, sweet and tangy.
For the Beverage Lover
Chipotle was boyfriend #2 and smoothies were my besties. You'd be surprised at how much flavor you can get from just fruit and water. I drank homemade smoothies made with frozen berries, bananas, and water all day everyday. I was also introduced to Smoothie King (I'm late, I know). There I'd ask for smoothies made with only fruit and ice, therefore removing the extra ingredients like sugar, protein blend, electrolytes, etc. Delicious.
Protein is super important to me, so during the fast, almost every meal included beans or meat substitute. Now that I'm not fasting, I pretty much stick to my Daniel Fast diet, but I've added some of my regular items that provide more protein, cleansing, and even a little enjoyment.
Lean meat - seafood, chicken, turkey
Coffee or tea - not more than one cup a day
Red wine - not more than one glass a day
Eggs - not often at all
Cheese - white only
Remember to exercise at least three times a week!
