As you already know, Jan. 8, 2018 marked my 25th birthday. My family and friends joke with me all the time, calling me "extra," about the fact that I choose to celebrate my birth all month. If you think about it in one light, yes, that is "extra" of me. It's even conceited, self-centered, and obnoxious. However, if you think of it like I do, you might start celebrating your birthday month too.
A little known fact about me is that I love birthdays. It doesn't have to be mine, I just love birthdays. They excite me. Why? Because one's birthday is the exact day on which the miracle of their life began. It's the very first day that person saw the light of day and came to existence as we know him/her. It marks the day that person began learning, loving, seeing, growing, feeling, living. That's pretty big.
Even more, each birthday reached marks one year completed and one year commenced. Neither were ever promised. When I stop think about that, and about how many people didn't make it as far as I have, it makes me happy, excited and grateful.
That being said, I celebrate my birthday all month because it's worth it. I love presents and surprises. I enjoy getting dressed up and going out. But, I can get and do those things any time throughout the year. What's important to me is that when my birthday comes around, I am forced to reflect on the past year as well as my life. I think about all I've experienced, good and bad, and I weigh everything out. I've struggled, I'm currently struggling, and I'm going to struggle in the future. However, not only do I have one more year of blessings, love, and living under my belt, but I simultaneously got the chance to start another filled with joy, second chances, and healthy relationships. While others, young and old, are passing all around me, I made it one more year! That's worth celebrating for as long as I possibly can and I want everyone to be a witness to it.
So excuse my being "extra" when January comes around, but I'm going to scream that it's my birthday at the top of my lungs as long as they allow. I'm going to dance for as long as my legs last. I'm going to celebrate my birthday like it's the most important day of my life for as long as I live because if you eliminate January 8th, I wouldn't be here and when the next one comes around, I might not be.
Are birthdays important to you? How do yo usually celebrate?
