Follow Me: My Natural Hair Routine

November 28, 2016

Hey there!I'm getting more and more questions about what I use in my hair so I want to briefly share my natural hair routine and favorite products. Now, before we begin, you must know that I have super fine, super dry, 3b/3c hair that tangles very easily. With that being said, let's get started.

Co-Wash and Detangle

Alright, so grab a wide-tooth comb. Separate those curls into 4-8 handleable sections. Apply an amount of Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner sufficient enough to seep through one section of hair. (Make sure that the section you're working on is always saturated with water before you apply conditioner.) Comb through the section from bottom to top, until the section is easy to pass through from top to bottom. Twist the section and pin or clip it up and repeat until you complete your head. Then bathe and shave and whatever else you have to do in the shower. After that, rinse about 25-75% of the conditioner out, depending on how much moisture you want throughout the day, and go.

Alternate: Rinse the Hello Hydration out completely and apply Aussie Miraculously Smooth Conditioner to your sections. Then rinse about 25-75% of it out and go. (I no longer use this step. My hair response better to the Hello Hydration alone.)

What do I style my curls with? Nothing! The only thing I put on my curls is the conditioner I wash it with. However, if I want a sleek look, I do use gel. Most people will tell you that gel is terrible for your hair. But Eco Styler Protein Gel is one of my best friends. It holds for as long as you let it, it has a nice faint smell, and it really does not dry your hair out. (My hair is naturally dry. Trust me, I would not use it so faithfully if it dried my hair out.) Apply 4-fingertips-worth to the edges most near the area you want to slick down, then spread and brush it toward that same area to smooth your hair down. I do not recommend applying any gel to your entire head. Some people brush gel through their curls, but to me it's just not healthy and its messy when it comes to getting it out.

Deep Conditioning

I deep condition every few weeks and after I take protective styles out. (I've never kept track of the time in between. I always forget. Don't be like me.) I was recently referred to Alikay Naturals Avocado Cream Moisturizing Repair Mask by a Tendrils and Curls employee. I thought it may be bogus because they just wanted me to spend money there but this product is awesome! Every time I use it my hair hugs me. It curls tighter, shines brighter, and bounces higher. I'm not exaggerating. I simply finger-spread it through sections of my hair, leave it in over night (the time is supposed to be 45 minutes), then rinse it out and co-wash. Boom! Beautiful, peppermint-smelling, avocado-revitalized hair. I love it.

I use any sulfate free shampoo. I don't like any of them, really, but if I swim or get my hair super dirty I have to wash it.

Have you used any of these products? How do you like them?
